WEEK 8 - Visual Semiotic
This week we are given lecture on the topic of visual semiotic.
Visual Semiotic is a sub-domain of semiotics that analyses the way visual images communicate a message.
Theory:
- Greek word from ''theoria''
- To reflect , observe and view.
- can be speculative or deductive or based on specific hypothesis.
- It can also based on evidence and data.
Graphic Design and visual communication apply by theories:
- Taken from a general study of the science of signs
- In Europe it is called Semiology
- In USA , it called Semiotics.
Connotation and Denotation are two principal methods of describing the meanings of words.
Connotation is refers to the wide array of positive and negative associations that most words naturally carry with them, whereas denotation is the precise, literal definition of a word that might be found in a dictionary.
Symbol
It has a relationship between the signifier and the signified. The interpreter understands the symbol through previous knowledge and experience. Spoken or written words are symbols. There is no reason that the word CAT should represent a cat instead of tree.

- Like we discuss the word ''dog'' .
It has three phonemes: d, o, and g.
It represent the sounds.
- Sound = idea / Image = Signified
- '' Dog'' = representation/ meaning = signifier
- When brought together - Sign!
Maybe I have miss out some of the part of lecture because i was so sleepy hahahahaha.
I have given a feedback from Mr. Fu of my proposal. I need to more specified on the topic not going so broad . This is my understanding on visual semiotics could provide useful means to consider the relation of the form and subject of design what it mean to represent.
